Irvine was born on November 10, 1965, in Newtownards, County Down, Northern Ireland, to Edmund Sr. and Kathleen. He grew up in the village of Conlig and went to Regent House Grammar School in Newtownards. Irvine has an older sister, Sonia, who worked as his physiotherapist until 1999. His first experience with motorsport was during family holidays at the British Grand Prix. His father also enjoyed racing single-seaters for fun. Irvine's childhood hero was fellow Northern Irishman, John Watson.
