With the generous support of Telethon, we will be launching a new program in Term Two of 2021, called The Telethon Teen Mentoring Program.

The program provides an exciting opportunity for autistic high school students to mentor autistic primary school students. This ground-breaking initiative enables autistic children to connect, collaborate and inspire each other as they work together on creative and meaningful community-driven projects.

What it will look like

The program will operate after school every Thursday of the school term, from 4-5pm at the Joondalup Family Centre.

It will run over three terms, with each term focusing on a different project. This will require long-term goal setting, the acquisition of new skills, taught by specialist teachers, and collaboration and communication between Mentors and Mentees.

Each group will have one Mentor, two Mentees and an experienced Support Worker to help children navigate any difficulties, lend support and encourage children to help each other.

The program will be also be overseen by the Directors of All Stars for Autism, Cara and Jo and we will be consulting with a Psychologist and Autism Advocate to ensure all children receive the most from the program.

Who are we looking for

How the teams work

There will be four teams, each made up of one Mentor and two Mentees, who are guided by a Support Worker. What this means, is that every child will be supported. While we know the Mentors will be able to guide and teach the Mentees, we’re also sure that there will be a reciprocal interchange between all group members. We’re thrilled to give older autistic children an opportunity to lead and equally excited to watch our creative, out-of-the box thinkers thrive with their beloved neurokin.
