STORYLINE:

A second Aeromexico flight from Mexico City to Los Angeles has been cancelled because of US concerns that it was a terrorism risk, airline and Mexican government officials reported.

Flight 490 had been scheduled to take off on Thursday evening but was cancelled by Mexican civil aviation authorities, Aeromexico reported.

An Aeromexico flight with the same number was cancelled on Wednesday.

Thursday's flight was cancelled after US officials said they were concerned it might be a safety risk. Wednesday's flight was cancelled under similar circumstances.

The Mexican government said that with both cancellations US officials did not explain why they felt the flights were a risk.

Out of 185 passengers scheduled to depart on Thursday's cancelled flight, 80 were able to leave the same day on other flights and the remainder were scheduled to leave within the next 24 hours.

Mexican officials initially claimed that US officials denied landing rights, while a Homeland Security official said the US government only shared threat information with the Mexican government.

Late on Thursday, the US Embassy released a statement saying that the Mexican government decided to cancel Wednesday's flight "in close consultation with the United States".

Mexico has agreed to increase its security measures since the September 11 attacks, although there has been no evidence that terrorists are using Mexico to carry out assaults on US soil.
