W. A. Mozart: String quartet in G major K 156 - I. Presto

Abstract:
As a result of a question about the repetition in the first movement (String quartet K 156 by Mozart), Professor Levin reflects on meaning of recapitulations, form and proportion, composer intention, baroque music study, concert performances, etc. Levin mentions several examples of works by Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn… He also relates anecdotes about Mahler conducting The Ring of the Nibelung, pianist Friedrich Gulda and Mozart performances. Walter Levin advises them to do the concert performances regarding the spirit of the composer (full of jokes in Mozart’s case) and avoiding seriousness or concern.
