Norwich City Walls - The Unseen Sections - Inside Black Tower which once Imprisoned Plague Sufferers

Completed in the mid 14th century Norwich’s city walls formed the longest circuit of urban defences in Britain. Originally including 40 towers with Cow Tower - a brick and flint artillery tower added in 1398-99. Now only a handful of the towers remain including the spectacular Black Tower at Carrow Hill. Black Tower was traditionally the residence of the city constable before being used to house plague victims in the 17th century. Bubonic Plague struck Norwich badly with four deadly outbreaks in 1579, 1603, 1625 & 1665. In 1625 Black Tower was made into a prison for 'unruly, infected persons.' The city council paid watchmen to ensure that those housed there didn't break lockdown. Pest Houses such as the Black Tower were utilised in attempts to stop the spread. Bubonic Plague (also known as the Black Death) turned sufferers skin black in patches and caused swollen limbs. Compulsive vomiting and splitting headaches made this a ghastly and agonising killer. One can only imagine how much suffering occurred at the Black Tower as carriers were hidden away from society before their inevitable demise.
