2017 VW Golf GTI Long-term Test Car Review

The VW Golf GTI is one of the most universally praised enthusiast cars on the market today, or yesterday. Now in its seventh generation, it has nurtured a very loyal and enthusiastic following with close to 2 million GTI’s sold since its launch 41 years ago in 1976. The GTI’s fit and finish is amongst the best its segment.


The performance and handling lives up to the GTI’s stellar reputation, with a turbocharged intercooled 2.0 litre TSI inline four cylinder 16V engine generating 210 hp at 4,300-6,200 RPM and 258 lb-ft of torque at 1,600-4,200 RPM. For everyday driving, this really is enough get up and go, most of the time. We had the opportunity to stretch its legs in a controlled environment and when the right peddle is firmly pushing into the carpet, the GTI performs. If one opts for the Performance 5-door, an extra 10 hp is on tap.
