DESIGN DETAILS
The increasing integration of renewable energy into modern power systems introduces critical challenges in maintaining stability, reliability, and efficiency of distribution networks. Optimal placement of renewable resources such as photovoltaic (PV) systems and wind turbines is essential to reduce power losses, enhance voltage stability, and improve overall system performance. This Matlab design proposes an innovative approach for optimal placement and sizing of distributed renewable energy sources using the Squirrel Search Algorithm (SSA), a nature-inspired metaheuristic optimization technique. The SSA algorithm mimics the foraging behavior of flying squirrels, employing gliding and seasonal monitoring strategies to efficiently explore the solution space and avoid local optima. The proposed framework considers multiple objectives, including minimizing real power losses, enhancing the voltage profile, and improving system security under varying load conditions. To assess effectiveness, extensive simulations are performed on the IEEE 118-bus mesh network using 24-hour load and generation data. Results demonstrate that optimally placed PV and wind-based distributed generation (DG) units significantly improve network efficiency by reducing power losses and strengthening voltage stability. The Newton–Raphson method is implemented in MATLAB for power flow analysis, ensuring accurate validation of the proposed optimization framework. Overall, the study confirms that the SSA provides an effective and reliable strategy for integrating renewable energy sources into complex distribution networks, thereby supporting sustainable and secure power system operation.

w_1,w_2 ,w_3 represent the weighting factors. The summation of weights should not exceed 1 here ω_1=0.333, ω_2=0.333, ω_3=0.333 considered f_1,〖 f〗_2, and f_(3 ) by providing equal weights for objectives.
