In Glendale, Arizona, David Benavidez was determined to secure a knockout victory with the title on the line.

Phoenix's hometown hero achieved his mission by dominating Montreal's David Lemieux, ultimately securing a third-round knockout win. Benavidez, a former IBF middleweight titlist, sent Lemieux to the canvas early in the second round and continued his assault, forcing a stoppage at 1:31 of the third round. This victory earned him the interim WBC super middleweight title in the Showtime main event held at Gila River Arena.

This marked Benavidez's second consecutive local headlining event, solidifying his position as the region's biggest attraction. Expressing gratitude to the enthusiastic crowd, he acknowledged the overwhelming support from his Arizona fans, comparing the atmosphere to that of an Arizona Cardinals game at the nearby NFL stadium.

“I just want to thank everyone who came out tonight. If it wasn't for my people from Arizona, then I wouldn't be here. It's surreal to me. I'm going to give my heart in the ring for all of you every day,” said Benavidez.

In the fight itself, Benavidez showcased his offensive prowess, nearly finishing Lemieux at the end of the first round with a relentless flurry of punches. Despite Lemieux's initial confidence, he found himself in trouble against Benavidez's powerful combinations.

The dominance continued in round two, with Benavidez landing an uppercut that sent Lemieux through the ropes and onto the canvas. Although Lemieux beat the count, he was on the brink of a knockout. Benavidez unleashed a series of uppercuts and power shots, causing a cut under Lemieux's left eye.

The one-sided nature of the bout was evident in the Compubox statistics, with Benavidez landing 74-of-151 punches (49%) compared to Lemieux's 26-of-109 (23.9%). Benavidez's power punches were particularly devastating, landing 58-of-111 (52.3%).

Lemieux's corner recognized the severity of the situation and asked the ringside inspector to signal to the referee, Harvey Dock, to stop the fight. Despite Lemieux's valiant effort, the match ended with a convincing victory for Benavidez.

Lemieux, now on the losing end of a five-fight win streak, acknowledged Benavidez's skill, stating, “Tonight was just not my night. I’m going to talk to my team to reassess. David Benavidez is a hell of a fighter.”
