In recent months, I've discovered that sifting through, understanding, refactoring and shipping updates to legacy COBOL applications is NOT an easy task. In several conversations with our clients and my teams' experts (Anthony Loupos and Jennifer McComas) its become incredibly clear how difficult it can be. It goes significantly beyond just thinking about the updates to critical core banking / insurance we'd like to make; they're often an entirely different architectural design, not well documented and skills to understand them are sparse. These applications may stand the test of time for running efficiently and effectively (for their original design), but if we want to make alterations to improve a customer experience, for example, that is a whole undertaking.
