We are here in Chattanooga, TN at Raccoon Mountain Caverns and Campground at probably one of the most unique campgrounds in the country. On top of all of the great things to do at the park, you are also at one of the closest campgrounds to Lookout Mountain and Downtown Chattanooga. I know a lot of people like to visit the Chattanooga area. I will say that as a local, I avoid it a lot of times for one reason, and that reason is traffic. The traffic on I-24 from the 24/75 split all the way through Chattanooga is always atrocious, but on this trip, I made the mistake of coming at 5pm in the afternoon as I was waiting for my daughter to get out of school and get home before leaving. It took me an extra hour to get around the city on 24, so just be warned that if you are going to go down 24 from the Chattanooga side, the traffic is always bad.

General Information: I actually know the owners of this campground personally and they are great people. I am going to try to give you guys an honest review and keep it as unbiased as possible. Most of the RV sites here at Raccoon Mountain have full hookups with 30 and 50-amp service. There are about 90 RV sites here as well as about 9 primitive sites and 8 cabins. According to their website, they were also voted the #1 thing to do in Chattanooga on TripAdvisor.

Amenities: There are a lot of amenities here in the campground. On top of the usual amenities that you can find other places, they have a full cave system here. This is obviously where the name Raccoon Mountain Caverns and Campground comes into play. This has to be the most unique amenity that I have seen at a campground. They have two tours which you can book in advance or you can book during your stay. They do give you a 15% discount for the tours when you stay in the campground. The Crystal Palace walking tour is the main tour that they have. We did do this tour. It has a few stairs and some places that you may have to duck when walking through. It takes about 45 minutes and the guide gives you some nice history about the cave and a little information on how it was formed. On this tour, you can expect to see some Stalagtites, Stalagmites, columns, and other geological marvels. They also have a tour called the wild cave tour that takes you deeper into the cave system. I believe that this tour usually lasts about 2 hours but it does require some crawling and squeezing through a few areas that you may have an issue with if you have some claustrophobia.

On top of the cave system, the campground has a couple of playgrounds, a swimming pool, a basketball hoop, and some lawn games such as corn hole. The bathhouse is very nice on the inside with tiled walls and has some shower stalls in it. The central area of the bathhouse also contains laundry machines to help you during your stay. They also have a good-sized dog park here so your furry friends can run and stretch their legs.
