One of the questions that comes up occasionally when I am talking to people about heat pumps is a real worry that we will make the air outside really cold, and when you think about it, you start to think... well yeah, this could be a nightmare, heat pumps whirring away and drawing all the warmth out of a cold winter's night. Well intuitively, this could make some sense, but the physics of what is going on might calm your fears.

All the heat that is being put into the house, that is taken from the outside air, leaks out of the house back to the outside. A heat pump is recycling heat, and actually adding a little bit of heat in the process. So we don’t need to worry about it getting too cold outside!

Heat pumps are the main tool we have for reducing emissions linked to heat. We have had one for almost 18 months. And are much more comfortable than when we had our gas boiler. The consistent warmth means we don’t have cold spots in our house.
