The game Popeye, which debuted with the Nintendo Famicom in Japan on July 15, 1983 (1986 for NES), is a rendition of the 1982 arcade game by Nintendo.

In this game, players take on the role of a sailor and are tasked with collecting various items that Olive Oyl drops. These items change depending on the level and can be 24 hearts, 16 musical notes, or 24 letters forming the word “HELP”. All this must be done while avoiding threats like the Sea Hag and Brutus.
The sailor can navigate in all directions using stairs and ladders. The game features a punch button but interestingly, there’s no jump button. Brutus is a constant threat who can move down a level or extend his reach to the level below and leap up to strike if he’s directly overhead.
Consuming a can of spinach, which is available in each level, allows Popeye to go on the offensive against Brutus. This grants temporary invincibility during which Brutus retreats and can be momentarily stunned by simply colliding with him. The sailor uses his punch to eliminate hazardous items such as bottles, vultures, and skulls.

A life is lost if the sailor is struck by Brutus or any flying object, or if a dropped item isn’t collected within a certain period after it lands at the bottom of the screen. Occasionally, Popeye can use a punching bag to knock a barrel loose. If this barrel lands on Brutus’s head, bonus points are awarded and Brutus is temporarily stunned.
The game also includes other characters from the original comic strip such as Olive Oyl, Swee’Pea, and Wimpy.

The Popeye game for Famicom has three levels. Each level has a different theme and objective, but the overall goal is to collect items dropped by Olive Oyl while avoiding various dangers.
It has four difficulty loops. After the fourth loop, the game doesn’t introduce anything new. Each loop increases the difficulty of the game.
