今更語るまでもないですが、ポール・マッカートニーが見た「ある夢」がインスピレーションになっていて、その夢とは「ポールが14歳の時に亡くなった実母のメアリー (Mary McCartney) が現れて言葉を告げる」というものです。

また、この曲は「ビートルズ解散が避けられない状況になった時の、ポールの辛い心境」を反映したものとも言われています。
