Reflections on Death, Dying & Dementia: Applications of Dance/Movement Therapy and Body-Mind Eastern Practices.

Abstract:

Longer life spans due to improved health care and technology has led to an explosion in the geriatric population, many of whom live in nursing homes and are characterized by increased frailty, disability and dementia. The nursing home setting lacks a culture that supports people through the challenges of loss, despair, and unresolved grief. This workshop will showcase six residents ranging from ages 85-95 with mild dementia in order to explore a new understanding of life and mortality. For example, dance/movement therapy techniques and cross-cultural body/mind practices may help to reflect on life’s events, accomplishments and achieve closure, providing a space for group processing and bonding through shared experience for both participants and therapists.

Goals:

1. Examine end-of-life concepts both from the viewpoint of Western culture, particularly in skilled nursing home facilities, as well as through the lens of Far Eastern culture.
2. Discuss the relationship between death and dying and how it shapes one’s perception during the end of life experience.
3. Discuss our role as therapists and what it means as caregivers to come to terms with our own mortality in order to support our clients.
