Apple announced at its WWDC 2024 keynote on June 10 that it is teaming up with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT to Siri.

ChatGPT will be free on iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia later this year, and users won't need an account to use it. Apple also said that user queries won't be logged. The chatbot will be included in Apple's writing tools across the system. Paid ChatGPT users can link their accounts to get premium features from OpenAI on Apple devices.

Apple and OpenAI explained that users will be asked for permission before any questions, documents, or photos are sent to ChatGPT. Siri will then provide the answer directly.

This partnership shows Apple's effort to add AI features to compete with other big tech companies. Apple had been talking to both Google and OpenAI about adding AI to its systems, but chose OpenAI.

“We’re excited to partner with Apple to bring ChatGPT to their users in a new way,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a statement to The Verge. “Apple shares our commitment to safety and innovation, and this partnership fits with OpenAI’s mission to make advanced AI accessible to everyone. Together with Apple, we’re making it easier for people to benefit from what AI can offer.”

An OpenAI spokesperson declined to give more details about the deal.

There has been talk that the recent launch of OpenAI’s GPT-4o, which has a voice assistant some say sounds like Scarlett Johansson in the movie "Her," was meant to show how OpenAI’s technology could improve Siri. Apple confirmed that GPT-4o will be the model powering ChatGPT in Apple devices when iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia come out later this year.

In addition to the OpenAI partnership, Apple announced several new AI features under the name Apple Intelligence.
