In this video, Shawn Powers covers a brief discussion on tips and best practices related to troubleshooting IT problems. He’ll draw from a career’s worth of experience to point you in the direction of the most efficient troubleshooting methods he’s encountered.

Our “Ask a Trainer” series gives instructors the opportunity to speak on various issues outside of the traditional constraints of a course environment. Most of Shawn’s career has been in system administration, which essentially revolves around solving problems.

When you’re troubleshooting, try to cut the problem in half. For example, if you can’t connect to a web server, the core issue could be in the workstation, the server, or somewhere else on the network. Narrow that broad range of possibilities by pinging the server: if you can connect to the server in any way, then everything from your workstation to that server seems to be working fine. That eliminates a massive potential pool of research, and you can narrow your focus to what isn’t working.
