Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle told reporters how Bill Walton, who died Monday, May 27, 2024, helped him get into a Grateful Dead concert for a first date with his now-wife. Walton and Carlisle were teammates on the 1985-86 NBA champion Boston Celtics.

Walton was a three-time national college player of the year during his UCLA career from 1971-74. The Portland Trailblazers selected Walton No. 1 overall in the 1974 NBA draft. The 6-foot-11 center won the 1977 NBA Finals and Finals MVP before winning league MVP in 1978.
