If you're wondering how basic power wheelchairs work, then this video should help. Power wheelchairs take a little getting use to but they're pretty straight forward. Most standard electric wheelchairs come with a joystick controller which is used to move the chair around. If you move the joystick forward, the unit moves forward. If you turn it left, it rotates the chair counter-clockwise. If you turn the joystick right, the chair rotates in a clockwise-direction.

When using a power wheelchair, you must ensure that the motors are both in "drive mode" otherwise the unit will not move. There are typically two levers on any power wheelchair which allow you to put the motors into "free-wheel" mode. If your power chair is in free-wheel mode, the joystick will not work (this is simply a safety feature which prevents users from rolling uncontrollably in the event that your battery dies).

Aside from the joystick, power chairs usually include a pair of leg rests or a foot plate. Footplates or leg rests are either able to flip up manually or some have power elevating leg rests or foot plates that require an upgrade.

The chair that you see in this video is a captains seat chair that has a head rest. Not all power wheelchairs have this type of chair, some have stadium style seats that are commonly found on travel power wheelchairs that disassemble. Captains chairs usually have more features like a depth adjustment lever or a recline lever. Folding power chairs and travel power chairs usually have smaller chairs that come off easily.
