Learning by Doing: A New Pedagogical Framework for Economics

How can we move beyond passive lectures and seminars to create confident, resilient, and deeply engaged learners? Introducing "Learning by Doing in Economics," an award-winning pedagogical framework that is revolutionizing the student experience, developed by Oleg Kitov, Toke Aidt and Vasileios Kotsidis, economics professors at the University of Cambridge.

This project was created to solve a key challenge in higher education: how to help students master difficult quantitative subjects without the anxiety and surface-learning promoted by traditional, high-stakes exam models. Our mission is to transform education into an active, student-centered journey of discovery, empowering students to become self-regulating, lifelong learners prepared for their future careers.

Our blended learning framework enhances traditional teaching by integrating several evidence-based innovations:
Regular, no-stakes practice tests: to promote deep learning, to build knowledge, and confidence in a safe environment.
Guided self-assessment & peer review: to develop critical thinking and the ability to evaluate quality work.
Collaborative group problem-solving: to foster teamwork and deeper understanding.
A simple and scalable cloud-based platform: to facilitate timely and meaningful feedback.
