Swelling under the jaw or Submandibular gland swelling can occur for multiple reasons. It may occur due to infection or stone formation in the submandibular gland. This swelling usually occurs during the meal and recedes after 30 minutes. In this video, Dr. Raman Abrol, from Abrol ENT institute and Research Centre discusses submandibular gland swelling or swelling under the jaw.
How does it present itself ?
👉It may occur as acute onset,
👉Occurs during chewing food.
👉Swelling occurs beneath the jaw,
👉Recedes on its own after 30 minutes after. But it may appear that the food is finished.
👉But may occur again during next meal.
What leads to swelling under the jaw ?
👉Swelling occurs in the submandibular gland
👉It produces saliva.
👉More likely stone formation can cause swelling,

Who is likely to develop stone in the submandibular gland?
👉Dryness in the mouth,
👉Less consumption of water, or dehydration,
👉Have poor oral hygiene,
👉Tobacco chewing or pan,
👉Presence of systemic diseases can cause calcium deposition or stones.

How do doctors approach these patients?
👉Examination thoroughly by with both hands and fingers,
👉To determine the exact location of the stone,
👉Antibiotic therapy helps.
👉Maintain good oral hygiene,
👉Keep body well hydrated,
👉Do regular gargles to prevent mouth dryness, and gargle with antiseptic like Betadine, also advised.
👉Doctors do ultrasounds to determine the presence and exact location of the stone.
👉Larger and embedded stones require surgery.
