The Wars of the Roses were a series of civil wars fought in England during the fifteenth century between two rival branches of the royal house of Plantagenet: the House of York and the House of Lancaster. The conflict took its name from the symbols used by the two families, the white rose of York and the red rose of Lancaster. The struggle began in 1455 during the troubled reign of Henry VI, whose weak rule and periods of mental illness created a power vacuum among the English nobility. Powerful lords and rival claimants to the throne began to compete for control of the kingdom, leading to repeated battles, shifting alliances, and political intrigue that divided the English aristocracy for decades.
