Lower house votes ‘yes’ to impeachment
The lower house of congress has voted in favour of impeaching President Dilma Rousseff. She’s accused of manipulating government accounts two years ago to cover up a growing deficit. The matter will now be sent to the Senate. While the vote required a two-thirds majority to pass the lower house, it only needs a simple majority to pass in Senate. Rousseff has accused her vice president, Michel Temer, of a conspiracy to destabilise the government. Temer will take over the government if Rousseff is impeached.

Magnitude 7.8 earthquake
A magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit northwestern Ecuador on Sunday night. At least 272 people have been killed and another 2,068 injured. The death toll is expected to rise. Buildings were destroyed and power lines knocked out. There have been around 230 aftershocks. President Rafael Correa has declared a state of emergency.

New polio vaccine
The World Health Organization has launched a new polio vaccine programme in 150 countries. The new vaccine targets the last two active strains of the virus. Africa has been free of the disease for more than a year. But it remains in Afghanistan and Pakistan, which have had 84 cases since the beginning of last year. The symptoms of polio include fever, headache, vomiting and pain in the limbs. It usually affects children under five and can lead to paralysis - and even death.

No conviction for Depp’s wife in dog case
Johnny Depp’s wife, Amber Heard, has pleaded guilty to making false statements on declaration papers in Australia. Last year, she declared she wasn’t bringing anything into the country even though she had her two dogs with her. Dogs coming from the US need to be placed in quarantine for 10 days after they arrive. The court decided against convicting her. She received a one-month good behaviour bond but will be fined 770 dollars if she breaks it. She’d originally faced charges of up to 10 years in jail or a 203,000 dollar fine. Those charges were later dropped.
