Networking and security behemoth Cisco is expanding its approach to AI by building out agentic AI capabilities, in addition to generative AI (GenAI), to support service provider and enterprise customers in managing their networks and IT infrastructure.

At Cisco Live in San Diego this week, Light Reading spoke with Jim Frey, principal analyst of networking for Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG), part of Omdia (a sister company to Light Reading), about Cisco's development of IT infrastructure management systems such as AI Canvas, Cisco's new GenAI and agentic AI platform. He explains how Cisco, and many other players in the tech and telecom industries, are expanding from GenAI to also developing AI inferencing technologies.

"Last year, Cisco was talking heavily about GenAI. And we've seen a lot of implementations of that in the form of things like AI Assistant and co-pilots – things that help you access knowledge," says Frey. "Now that's progressing beyond just being a database of knowledge to 'how do we have it do more proactive activities, break down and do more complex tasks and take advantage of it to make it effective in reducing the workload for folks in both enterprises and service providers?'"
