Halcyon: An Evening With The Skate By Focus Kite Designs | Sky Rider Limited

Glider kites have following all their own and are one of the most relaxing ways to fly imaginable. The kite in this video was originally conceived as a “what would happen if” conversation between myself and Hunter Brown from Focus Kites. I had a new routine I had conceived for indoor that would require a glider kite and I wanted to maximize the glide performance because there were certain notes in the music and I was concerned that something “off the peg” would either lack the size and presence I wanted or, in being big enough, would loose glide rate. So, I reached out to Hunter and said “what would happen if you made a Skate out of dyneema”? Hunter had the idea to use the original sail graphic and to change a number of the details of construction for lighter methods he had first used on the kites for Disney’s Kite Tails show by the Kite Man Group. The end result is a kite that with a little over 5 foot wing span that lost around 50g from the standard version. That may not sound like a lot but for a glider and one that is still on the small side (Hunter’s other two creations are 7.5 feet and 10.5 feet respectively) that’s a ton to save.

This video was created on a whim. I was heading to dinner with some friends one night and saw that I had time to kill so I diverted by the park. When I got there, I discovered there was no wind. Luckily had my indoor bag with me and so with absolutely zero expectations I decided to put out a camera, grab the Skate and see what happens. It was an incredibly peaceful experience. Flying a glider kite outdoors in zero to near zero wind is a very zen experience anyway, but this is an elevation. I really hope I captured the peaceful nature of that moment and that you all can experience that perfect moment with me. See you out there…
