A blood-stained cricket bat found near the bed of South African Olympic and Paralympic track star Oscar Pistorius has become the center of the inquiry into the death of his girlfriend, model and budding reality TV star Reeva Steenkamp.
Reports say police are testing blood found on the bat while they consider different scenarios the bat may have played in the death of Steenkamp. Steenkamp died from multiple gunshot wounds while it is suggested the bat may have been used to inflict further head wounds.
Pistorius, 26, was formally charged at Pretoria Magistrate's Court with one count of murder after Steenkamp, 30, was found dead at his home in Pretoria early Thursday morning.
According to reports the bloody bat and one bullet casing were found in Pistorius' bedroom, casting doubt on initial reports that suggested Pistorius may have mistaken Steenkamp for a home intruder. South Africa's Beeld newspaper reported that police and security guards had been called to the house two hours before the alleged shooting after neighbors heard Pistorius and Steenkamp yelling.
Prosecutors say they will argue that Pistorius committed premeditated murder. Pistorius's bail hearing has been postponed until tomorrow. He is currently being held at the Brooklyn Police Station in Pretoria.
