What is HSG?
Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is a crucial test to check the patency of the fallopian tubes in cases of infertility. This procedure involves taking an X-ray to see if the fallopian tubes are open or blocked, which can significantly affect your fertility.

When is the HSG test done?
The test is ideally performed within the first 10 days of your menstrual cycle to avoid exposing the developing follicle to X-rays.

Preparation before HSG test:
Light meal if not under anesthesia
Wear dark-colored clothes
Carry a pad for possible spotting
Bring an attendee, preferably an adult relative or friend

HSG procedure:
Performed in an X-ray room, the procedure involves inserting a cannula into the cervix and pushing a liquid dye called Urografin into the fallopian tubes. The process takes about 5-10 minutes, and X-rays are taken to check if the dye passes through the tubes.

Medication before and after HSG test:
Antibiotics and mild painkillers are prescribed to prevent infection and manage discomfort. Premedications like atropine and antispasmodics help relax the pelvic muscles.

Post HSG test procedure:
Expect slight discomfort and watery discharge for a few hours to a day. Resume normal activities, including work and travel, within 2-3 hours after the procedure.

Routine activities after HSG test:
There are no restrictions on daily activities, and sexual intercourse can be resumed the next day.

Report of HSG test:
The results can be:

Normal: Both tubes are patent.
Unilateral Blockage: One tube is blocked.
Bilateral Blockage: Both tubes are blocked.
