How Long Does it Take to Become an RN (Registered Nurse)

How long does it take to become an RN (registered nurse)? What are the different types of degrees can you get? What's the difference between a diploma program, associate's degree program, and a bachelor's degree program for aspiring nurses looking for a nursing program?

To become a registered nurse, you'll first have to complete high school or get an equivalent to a high school diploma. Once you do that, you can generally become a nurse in one of three ways:

1. A nursing diploma program, sometimes called an RN diploma, usually takes about 2-3 years to complete. These programs are relatively rare (and may be phased out in the future), but they do still exist.

2. An associate's degree program, also called an ADN (or ASN) degree, is a degree program that takes approximately 2-3 years to complete.

3. A bachelor's degree program, also called a BSN degree, takes approximately 3-4 years to complete.

For students who already have an associate's or bachelor's degree, there are some accelerated or "2nd degree programs" offered by many universities, and I'd highly recommend you look into those so that you can save time.

Regardless of which program you choose to attend (diploma program, ADN, or BSN), once you complete the program and pass the NCLEX-RN exam, you'll be licensed to practice as a registered nurse.

How long did it take for me to become a registered nurse after high school? I graduated high school in May of 2005. I then applied to a local university that offered a BSN program in nursing, and I began attending in the fall of 2005.

For the first two years of the university program, you'll generally have to take the necessary core classes such as history, English, and so forth. The last two years will generally consist of nursing classes and clinicals.

I graduated from my BSN program in the spring of 2009, and I passed NCLEX in June of 2009. So, it took me four years after high school to complete my BSN and pass the NCLEX exam. I was already hired as a nurse by the time I passed NCLEX.
