After a variety of tests, Daymara Cano got news she never expected. She had acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a type of blood cancer. An aggressive chemotherapy regimen did its job and put Ms. Cano into remission. “But we knew disease would return without stem cell transplantation,” said medical oncologist Yuliya Linhares, M.D., chief of Lymphoma Services at Miami Cancer Institute, a part of Baptist Health. Stem cell transplants are used to treat a variety of blood cancers as well as other blood diseases.
