Some 600 years ago, the Missouri River valley saw an outbreak of violence that culminated in the attack of the Crow Creek village, and the murder of nearly 500 men, women, and children. Their bodies were placed in the defensive ditch, the construction of which came too late to save the villagers. Not only did these people die in the conflict, but their bodies were aggressively mutilated. A testimony to the vitriolic nature of warfare at this time.
