Poveglia Island is built on death. During the bubonic plague, over 160,000 infected victims were dumped on this island and burned alive. Today, the soil is estimated to be 50% human ash. You're literally walking on the dead.
But it gets worse.
In 1922, a mental asylum was built directly on top of the mass graves. A doctor performed horrific experiments on patients in the bell tower—lobotomies without anesthesia, torturous "treatments." Eventually, he was driven mad by the screams of the plague victims and threw himself from the tower.
Fishermen won't go near the island. They say you can hear screams. See shadows moving. And the bell tower still rings... even though the bell was removed in 1913.
The Italian government permanently banned all visitors in 2014. Poveglia remains abandoned—a graveyard of 160,000 souls that refuse to rest.
