Both Redondo Union and Santa Margarita had new life in the State Region Tournament as the #4 Seahawks invited #5 Eagles for a first round matchup.

The big question was if Redondo Union was healthy or not. Senior Chace Holley and junior Kaiden Wilson were both nursing injuries and were game time decisions. Both played but were not even close to 100%. That didn’t stop Holley from gutting it out and making a big impact for Redondo Union.

Santa Margarita was riding high early as Georgia Tech bound Senior Kaiden Bailey went 3-3 from deep in the first quarter giving the Eagles a 20-17 lead heading into the 2nd quarter.

SJ Madison and Holley kept Redondo in the game each with 10 points at the half but it was Drew Anderson scoring 10 points in the 2nd quarter to hold onto a 3 point half-time lead 37-34.

Chris Sanders led the Seahawks, scoring 11 of his 20 points in the 3rd quarter. Anderson continued to be the hot hand for Santa Margarita hitting his 4th three of the game and the score was locked at 57 apiece at the end of 3.

Inside 3 minutes to play with Redondo Union leading 67-66, SJ Madison came up with a steal and passed it forward but Kaiden Bailey stole it back finding Kyman in the corner that drained a 3 for the go ahead bucket 69-67. With under a minute to go Sanders got Redondo Union to within 2 points knocking down two free throws.
On the ensuing possession the Seahawks couldn’t secure a rebound as Santa Margarita got the ball back on a jump ball. In a must foul situation they sent Anderson to the line where he drained both to go up 75-71. Time ran out on Redondo in this game as Santa Margarita outlasts Redondo Union 75-71 to win and advance.

Drew Anderson was nearly perfect with the only blemish, 1 missed free throw and 1 turnover. Anderson shot 11-11 from the field including 4-4 from three, 3-4 from the charity stripe scoring 29 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Oh and by the way he had 3 blocks and 3 assists to boot. Anderson who is currently committed to Oregon State is still planning on attending although Head Coach Wayne Tinkle agreed to part ways with the Beavers next season. If Anderson possibly becomes available, he’ll be someone a lot of coaches would be targeting to add to their roster.

Santa Margarita will now have a rematch with Sierra Canyon in the State Regional Semi-finals on Saturday night.
