If You Go To Confession Say This 3 Things To God | C.s. Lewis

Confession is one of the most beautiful opportunities we have as believers to come back into the arms of God, fully loved and fully forgiven. It’s not about shame or condemnation—it’s about grace and transformation. God doesn’t need us to confess for His benefit; He already knows everything. Confession is for us. It’s our chance to grow closer to Him and step into the fullness of His love and mercy.

When you approach God in confession, here are three powerful things you should say, not only with your lips but with your heart. These words open the door to healing, restoration, and a renewed relationship with the Lord.

1. “Lord, I admit I’ve fallen short.”
The first step to meaningful confession is acknowledging our need for God’s grace. It takes humility to say, “I’ve messed up.” But in doing so, you align yourself with the truth. The Bible reminds us in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Admitting your sins is not about beating yourself up. It’s about being honest before the One who already knows your struggles and loves you anyway. When you bring your failures to God, you give Him the opportunity to do what only He can do—wash you clean and make you new.

2. “Lord, I trust in Your mercy and forgiveness.”
Confession is incomplete without faith. After admitting your sins, you must embrace the truth that God’s mercy is greater than your mistakes. Micah 7:18 says, “Who is a God like You, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of His inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy.”

This is the heart of God. He delights to show mercy! When you confess, don’t hold on to guilt or shame. Trust that God has already covered your sins through the sacrifice of Jesus. Say, “Lord, I trust You. I believe in Your love for me, and I receive Your forgiveness.”

Walking in forgiveness means leaving your burden at the cross. Don’t pick it back up. God doesn’t hold your sins over your head, and neither should you.

3. “Lord, help me to turn away from sin and walk in Your ways.”
True confession leads to repentance—a turning away from sin and a turning toward God. This is where transformation happens. Psalm 51:10 captures this prayer beautifully: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

Ask God to give you the strength to live differently. Confession is not just about asking for forgiveness; it’s about seeking God’s help to grow and change. He knows your struggles and weaknesses. He also knows the plans He has for you—plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).

When you surrender your life to Him, He will empower you to walk in victory. It won’t always be easy, but God will walk with you every step of the way.


Confession isn’t just a moment of admitting guilt—it’s a moment of renewal, grace, and freedom. When you come to God with honesty, faith, and a desire to change, you open yourself to His transforming power.
