Marilyn Horne, born 1934 in Bradford, Pennsylvania, began her career with recordings for television sitcoms, pirate pop records and eventually as the voice double for Dorothy Dandridge in Otto Preminger’s "Carmen Jones" (1954). Eventually, it was Horne`s work with Dame Joan Sutherland in the bel canto operas of composers such as Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini, that first brought her major stardom in the 1960s. She is a recipient of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

This historical documentary from m1994 looks back over Horne’s remarkable career. While the legendary singer talks about her life and music in an exclusive interview, performance excerpts, archive footage and recordings demonstrate her magnificent vocal ability. The film visits Marilyn Horne’s hometown of Bradford, Pennsylvania, and travels with her to Long Beach, California, where her family moved when she was eleven years old. It also features interview segments and private footage with her musical collaborator Joan Sutherland, her former husband and friend, conductor Henry Lewis, singer Samuel Ramey and her biographer Jane Scovell.
Highlights of the documentary include coverage of Horne’s final appearance in a Rossini opera, recorded at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in 1993 – and of the gala recital at Carnegie Hall in January 1994, which marked her 60th birthday, as well as the launch of the Marilyn Horne Foundation (set up to revive the art of the vocal recital in America). Her passion for this cause is matched by her commitment to training young singers, as she is seen giving a masterclass during the Young Singers of the World competition. An archive clip recalls one of Horne’s greatest career moments when she sang at the inauguration of the 42nd president of the USA, Bill Clinton in 1993.
