The German composer Hans Werner Henze is best known to guitarists through his collaborations with English guitarist Julian Bream which brought about several new works for the guitar. However Henze’s work in opera, ballet, and orchestral music far surpasses his work for the guitar. Drei Tento’s sits in the repertoire as a solo work but it’s musical language and original context is from the song cycle Kammermusik 1958. The cycle was written for Peter Pears and Julian Bream and includes three songs for guitar and tenor, three movements of string quartet with bassoon, cor anglais, clarinet and double bass, three movements for the entire ensemble, and three short solos for the guitar. These solos became a standard of the repertoire after Julian Bream recorded them separately and have solidified a place in the canon.

Kammermusik 1958 is set to the poem In lieblicher Bläue by German romantic poet Friedrich Hölderlin. The poem is an homage to classic themes and includes references to greek mythical figures such as Oedipus and Hercules. The translation for the titles of the tento translates to ‘I- You, beautiful brook’ ‘II - It finds the eye’ ‘III - Son Laios.’ The last two reference the myth of Oedipus who injured his own eyes to repent for killing his father Laios, and marrying his mother.

This live performance was made in fulfillment for the Doctor of Musical Performance from the Royal Irish Academy of Music in 2019. This video was unfortunately taken from a very old webcam and recorded through a Blue Yeti microphone. I cleaned the audio up with some light EQ. I am playing a guitar by Martin Woodhouse.
