Welcome to the Voice of America’s News Words.

Wildlife officials in Thailand are working to contain some beloved monkeys that live in a small city northeast of Bangkok.

NUISANCE

Officials have recently built massive cages to contain the celebrated macaques of Lopburi. Their growing population has become a public nuisance following physical interactions with humans.

A nuisance is a troublesome, difficult person or thing or situation. The word partly comes from a Latin word meaning “to harm.” We usually use it when talking about minor problems.
