The simmering tensions between the United States and Russia took a new turn this week as a Russian naval group patrolled the Atlantic Ocean and conducted long-range missile drills before approaching the US coast.

The drills, reported by the U.S. Naval Institute News on June 11th, 2024 involved the Kazan, a Yasen-M-class guided-missile submarine, and the Admiral Gorshkov, a frigate equipped with long-range land-attack missiles.

Russia's Defense Ministry confirmed the drills simulating anti-ship missile strikes with no live ammunition. The exercise demonstrated long-range strike capabilities, with the Kazan nuclear submarine and Admiral Gorshkov frigate virtually engaging targets over 350 miles away. These advanced warships have recently arrived in Havana, Cuba, for pre-planned exercises.
