Excerpt from the album Zashto?. Nekoronovanite Printsove by Sandy Evans was recorded at Studios 301 in 2023. Based on the dual ARIA winning Mara! quintet of Mara Kiek (voice and percussion), Sandy Evans (saxes), Paul Cutlan (clarinets and saxes), Lloyd Swanton (double bass) and Llew Kiek (acoustic and electric guitars, Turkish lute, and bouzouki), Mara! Big Band adds Jess Ciampa (drums and percussion), Gary Daley (accordion), Andrew Robson (alto and baritone sax), James Greening (trombone and trumpet) and Sam Golding (trumpet and tuba), along with vocalists Jarnie Birmingham, Jenny Dornan and Silvia Entcheva. Engineered by Chris Doherty, and produced by Guy Dickerson and Llew Kiek, the music is a journey across several cultures of migrant experiences, with lyrics in Persian, Irish, Bulgarian and English. A potent mix of Jazz big band and Gypsy brass band, with great ensemble playing and stunning solos, Zashto? is an original masterpiece from Australia's most experienced and widely toured world and jazz musicians.
