It's finally time for another edition of Improvise Like a Pro! This is really the series that made me want to start this channel. My vision for these has always been to offer up a primer course for what I think are the most important tunes in the standard jazz rep. I think through studying tunes like this, you can really gain all the knowledge you need to be the best improviser you can be!
In this episode, I'll be taking you guys through my approach to the classic bebop tune Confirmation by Charlie Parker. We'll learn how to arrange a super busy melody like this as a chord solo, and then we'll learn some great voicings you can use in your comping. The theme of this episode is voice leading, so lots of my choices have been made with that most important principle in mind!
Finally, I'll take you guys through the etude that I've written over the changes for this tune. This one has absolutely everything you could hope for! Lots of rhythmic variety, classic bebop lines, chromaticism, phrases from the master, Barry Harris, and much more. The goal with these is to craft something that sounds natural, but not "guitar-like" so that we really learn to play bebop the way it should sound, not just the way it feels best on our home instrument. I'll break down two of my favorite licks for this solo in depth for you near the end of the video too!
If you like what you saw here, don't forget to subscribe to the channel and hit the bell for notifications. I upload new lessons every Sunday so keep your eye on this space. Thanks for stopping by!
