Algeria rejected a US-led resolution that called for “the imperative of an immediate and sustained ceasefire” due to the language in the resolution which “avoids mentioning the responsibility of the Israeli occupying power” for its devastating actions inflicted on Gaza.

“The text presented today does not convey a clear message of peace. It tacitly allows for continuing civilian casualties and lack clear safeguards to prevent further escalation,” said Algeria’s UN ambassador Amar Bendjama.

He added: “The measures to reduce civilian harm from ongoing and future operation implies a licence for continuing bloodshed,” further stating that Algeria was “particularly concerned about a potential military operation in Rafah.”

The proposed resolution put forth by Washington is different from previous draft resolutions which demanded an unconditional ceasefire and which were vetoed by the US.
