The READING SCREEN has settings that pertain to the way pages and posts are displayed on the site.

The two FRONT PAGE DISPLAYS buttons determine if your front page will display your POSTS or a STATIC PAGE as the front page to the site.
This is set to Your Latest Posts by default. The front page is a lists of posts with the newest displayed first for reading. This is typical for blog sites.

Pages that are created in the Pages Admin screen are used for static content. Selecting the A STATIC PAGE button will display a page with this static content as the front page.
The A Static Page has two selections.
One for selecting a page for the front page and the second for selecting a page to display the posts.
For instance, if you want a welcome page to appear as the front page then create that static page and select it from the drop-down menu.
Now that page will appear as the front page but without the posts. You now need to tell WordPress to display your actual posts somewhere else. You can create another page, for instance a page called My Blog and by selecting that page from the drop-down menu your telling WordPress to display the posts on that page. Now you can make a link in a navigation bar so visitors can access the My Blog page.
IF you leave the post page on "SELECT" then your posts will only be accessible from the navigation options such as the CATEGORY and ARCHIVE LINKS and will not be available as a typical list of posts.

The next selection tells WordPress how many post to show per page. Select a number that fits for your site.

The SYNDICATION FEEDS SHOW THE MOST RECENT is the number of items that is downloaded through your site feeds, like RSS feeds for instance. Select a number that fits for your site.

The FOR EACH ARTICLE IN A FEED, SHOW selection will determine if the feed contains the full text or, if you are trying to save bandwidth, a summary.

ENCODING FOR PAGES AND FEEDS is the character-encoding that is used to handle the storage and transmission of the text over the internet. Unless you have a specific reason to change this then the Unicode Transformation Format - 8 Bit or UTF-8 coding is adequate.

REMEMBER to SAVE ALL CHANGES before you exit the screen.
