Welcome to Whitby Abbey,, an English Heritage site, a majestic ruin with a rich history that spans over 1,300 years. Located on the cliffs overlooking the North Sea, Whitby Abbey is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Yorkshire. In this video, we take a short walk around the abbey on a weekend in Whitby, when the abbey is illuminated with colourful floodlights.

We start our walk at the bottom of the 199 steps, which lead up to the abbey grounds. As we climb the steps, we take in the stunning views of the Whitby harbor and the sea. Once we reach the top, we explore the abbey ruins, including the chapter house, the refectory, and the cloisters. We also learn about the history of the abbey, from its founding in 657 to its dissolution in 1540.

At the end of our walk, we take a moment to enjoy the view of the abbey illuminated at night. The colorful lights create a magical atmosphere, making this a truly unforgettable experience.

About Whitby Abbey

Whitby Abbey is a Benedictine abbey that was founded in 657 by Hilda of Lindisfarne. The abbey played an important role in the history of Christianity in England, and it was also a major center of learning and scholarship. In the 12th century, the abbey was rebuilt in stone, and it remained in use until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539.

Today, Whitby Abbey is a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the ruins of the abbey, learn about its history, and enjoy the stunning views of the Whitby coast.
