Eps. 163 - Rod Douglas | Lead Development Artist - The Color of Motion 🔥

To close us out for this 3rd qtr. we welcome friend and guest Rod Douglas, Lead Development Artist at Brazen Animation. 🤩 🤩

He’s originally from San Diego, CA however, after packing his bags and moving to Dallas at the tender age of 7, he considers himself a proud Texan. From a young age he has been enamored with cartoons and animation in general, and has always aspired to make his own movies. Now he’s doing just that and couldn’t be happier.

He graduated from the Art institute of Dallas in 1998 with a degree in computer animation. Shortly after graduating he had the opportunity to work as a storyboard and layout artist on the "Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius" television series, a Nickelodeon property being produced at DNA Productions in Dallas. He then went on to work on his first feature film, “The Ant Bully,” starring Nicholas Cage and Julia Roberts. He was also a story artist on Nickelodeon’s Emmy award winning series "Back at the Barnyard.”

His professional adventures continued as he left animation for a short time to work at HKS Architecture. His firm’s client list included The Ritz Carlton, The Dallas Cowboys, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, The W Hotel and The Indianapolis Colts. Missing the uniquely creative environment of an animation studio, he returned to his lifelong passion by joining Reel FX Creative Studios in 2009 as a storyboard and 3D layout artist. He worked as part of an international storyboard team on Reel FX’s second feature film, The Book of Life, produced by Guillermo Del Toro. He’s worked on an array of creative projects at Reel Fx including Open season 2, Ugly Dolls, Rumble and Scoob2 feature films. Perhaps most exciting, he is currently directing his own live action short film and a comic book.

He enjoys arts, architecture, sports, film and creating great stories and spending time with his wife and two children.

We dive into his time in the industry, lessons he's learned along the way, his passion for storytelling and animation, the impact of AI on the industry, the need for more diversity and so much more. 💥💥
