Title: Secure in Christ
Text: 1 John 5:18-21

18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not sin, but the one who is born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him. 19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world is under the sway of the evil one. 20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know the true one. We are in the true one — that is, in his Son, Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, guard yourselves from idols. -- 1 John 5:18-21 (CSB)

The whole world is under the sway of the evil one
5 So he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 The devil said to him, “I will give you their splendor and all this authority, because it has been given over to me, and I can give it to anyone I want. 7 If you, then, will worship me, all will be yours.” -- Luke 4:5-7 (CSB)

4 In their case, the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelievers to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. -- 2 Corinthians 4:4 (CSB)

Dead in our trespasses and sins
Blinded by god of this world
By nature sons of wrath
Influenced by the spirit of disobedience
Under control, and power of the evil one

II. We are of God
20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know the true one. We are in the true one — that is, in his Son, Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. -- 1 John 5:20 (CSB)

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, -- Romans 1:16 (CSB

5 Who is the one who conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? -- 1 John 5:5 (CSB)

13 He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son he loves. 14 In him we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. -- Colossians 1:13-14 (CSB)

Children of God are characterized by

Complete joy
Walk in the Light
Confess sin and overcome it
love and keep God’s commands
Walk like Jesus walked
Loves his brothers
Loves God
Loves God’s word
Overcomes the evil one
Has the Spirit of God leading him
Victory and freedom from sin
Confidence before God in prayer
Confidence before God on judgement day
Has assurance of salvation
Has the nature of God – Born of God
We are in the true one – that is, in his Son Jesus Christ...

III. The fight still rages on
Little Children, guard yourselves from Idols.

8 Be sober-minded, be alert. Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour. 9 Resist him, firm in the faith -- 1 Peter 5:8-9 (CSB)

In every situation take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. -- Ephesians 6:16 (CSB)

III. The fight still rages on

Application Questions:
Have you been delivered from darkness into the kingdom of Jesus Christ? When you hear the gospel is your heart rejoicing or does it tense up and seem extremely boring to you?
What competes with Jesus in your life today? What controls and consumes you today?
Do you find security and rest in Jesus Christ today? Do you find yourself victorious in the battle that rages? Are you reigning with Christ during it all?
