Death of the Music Superstar?

From the 50s right through to the 2000s - every decade has given us a number of music superstars. But the concept seems to have taken a considerable dip over the last ten years or so.

In fairness there have been some big names in the 2010s such as Ed Sheeran, Drake, Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus Ariana Grande & Dua Lipa. But I’m sure you’ll agree their impact has paled in comparison to that of their predecessors. And new music superstars seem to be thin on the ground these days.

So what exactly has brought about the decline of the superstar? What part have streaming platforms such as Spotify & Apple played in all this? What have the record companies been getting wrong? Why is music struggling to compete against computer games and social media? Why have Gen-Zers lost interest in music? Has the album been eclipsed by the playlist? And which current stars are our best hope for saving the future of music stardom? This mini-documentary explores these questions and more.
