LatePost, a Chinese source, has suggested that Tesla is planning to start the mass production of the complete version of its long-awaited and highly-anticipated 4680 battery, which was initially unveiled in September 2020 during Battery Day. The complete version of the 4680 cells will reportedly be fully produced using Tesla’s dry electrode process (DBE), and these cells are slated to be integrated into consumer vehicles before the end of the year. This technology is crucial for Tesla's future road with 4680 batteries, as it promises to speed up production and reduce costs.

It's worth noting that Tesla had created a dry-process cathode coil in the laboratory at the end of 2022 but was unable to mass-produce it due to technical misjudgments. After Drew Baglino, the project leader, left in April this year, Tesla adjusted its technical approach and made a breakthrough in the mass production of dry-process cathodes.
The fact that both the cathode and anode will be manufactured using the dry electrode process is a major step for Tesla. Dry electrode production eliminates many steps, significantly reducing the capital expenditure of unit battery production capacity in plants. It also improves battery performance and production efficiency. A Tesla insider told LatePost that mastering dry electrode processes could give Tesla serious momentum. "Once dry electrodes are developed, they can change Tesla," he said.

Back in 2023, when Tesla first adopted the 4680 battery in the Cybertruck, which we can call the “compromise version of the 4680”—they failed to achieve their goal of reinventing the battery manufacturing process due to continued reliance on traditional wet electrodes. The "compromise version" 4680, currently in mass production at a factory in Texas, features a negative electrode (anode) produced using Tesla’s own dry electrode process. However, the positive electrode (cathode) is sourced from suppliers like LG New Energy and two Chinese companies, which still use conventional wet electrode processes. Not to mention the positive electrode is the most expensive component in the batteries, accounting for over 35% of the cells’ overall cost. This reliance on multiple suppliers is not ideal from a cost perspective.
