The hippogryphs are creatures of unknown origin. Legend has it that they were created by Cenarius himself as a gift for the night elves, though that is unconfirmed. Regardless, they are known to have been used by the night elf military since before the War of the Ancients. Judging by the name of one of the first night elves to speak with the hippogryphs, Dorendil Wildcaller, the kinship between the two races likely began long after the dark trolls settled near the Well of Eternity and were transformed into night elves.

Hippogryphs are highly intelligent, loyal creatures, and are known to also understand speech (although they can't talk). They have a tendency to roost high up in mountain caves and are usually wary of strangers, but are able to recognize a friend of a friend. They also tend to be fairly prideful about their ability to navigate difficult conditions and often expect praise or acknowledgment from their riders for this.

Hippogryphs are mostly used in the Sentinel army as transport for messengers or to bear archers, and are known for the almost empathic way in which they can respond to their riders. The night elves developed a code system in order to communicate with them in battle, which consists of specific taps on the hippogryph's neck, though, notably, they are also capable of understanding and responding to code sounds.

Hippogryphs come in various colours, usually typical of a specific area. The green variant, typically used by the night elves, is usually found in Ashenvale and, to a lesser extent, in Azshara. Feralas hippogyphs tend to be either dark blue or purple-pink, while Howling Fjord and some Azshara ones tend to be white and brown. The Argent Crusade often makes use of this latter type of hippogryph, being, perhaps, their most commonly used mount in Northrend, which is incidentally also sometimes hunted by the taunka for their down feathers, which have many uses. Notably, the high elf Silver Covenant is known to make use of almost-entirely white hippogryphs.
