At around 12:50 AM last Thursday morning, Los Angeles Fire Department Engine 15 was dispatched to a reported rubbish fire at the 3700 block of South Grand Avenue. Engine 15 arrived on scene to find a large homeless encampment fire with exposures to a commercial building. Engine 15 requested a full structure response as the fire had extended into the commercial building. The firefighters went into an offensive attack to extinguish the fire. However, the fire continued to rapidly spread thus causing firefighters to switch into a defensive posture. Additional units were requested to help battle the fire as it was now shooting through the roof and starting to extend into an adjacent commercial building. Firefighters continued a defensive attack on the initial building and went into an offensive attack on the adjacent building. It took 99 firefighters just under 160 minutes to knock down the fire. The initial structure is a total loss while the adjacent structure suffered extensive damage. No injuries reported.
