In the early 19th century, the Caucasus mountains were the front line of a desperate struggle. The Russian Empire moved south, determined to conquer village by village. Facing them were the Adyghe people, fighting for their mountains, their homes, and their way of life.

Among the leaders who emerged from this conflict was Gerandiqo Berzeg, a figure whose courage turned him into a symbol of resistance. From narrow mountain passes to open councils, Berzeg organized his people, rode with warriors, and defied a growing empire.

But by 1864, the war was lost. Thousands of Circassians were forced from their homeland. Villages stood empty, families were scattered, and the Black Sea became the path of exile. Berzeg himself crossed to Ottoman lands, carrying with him the memory of a vanished world.

Today, his name is still spoken with respect—not only as a warrior, but as a reminder of freedom, loss, and a people’s enduring bond with their land.
