According to sources familiar with the situation, Bangladesh is requesting $2 billion from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in an attempt to increase its foreign currency reserves.

Bloomberg reported on Wednesday that the government wrote letters to the two lenders requesting $1 billion each to help the economy cope with the ripple effects of the war in Ukraine and energy price shocks. The people, who asked not to be identified because the matter is not yet public, requested anonymity because the matter is not yet public.

The requests were made days after the government requested a loan from the International Monetary Fund as a precautionary step to bolster the nation's foreign currency reserves in response to worries about contagion risks. Sri Lanka and Pakistan, two South Asian neighbors, are in negotiations with the IMF for loans to help them weather their separate economic crises.
