Whip inflation now
That was President Gerald Ford’s cringy attempt to get a grassroots movement going to fight the really high inflation of the 1970s.

Sure, people are understandably freaking about inflation now. Prices for American consumers have gone up 6.8% compared to a year ago. However, shortly after Ford took office in August 1974, that rate was 12.3%. On October 8, 1974, Ford gave a speech calling for proposals like carpooling, turning down thermostats, and starting vegetable gardens to WHIP INFLATION NOW. And WIN, get it?

His administration distributed free buttons, stickers, yard signs, and a bunch of other stuff with the slogan on it. All you had to do was fill out this form saying you’d enlist to be an Inflation Fighter! Ford himself even asked folks to wear the buttons to publicly show their support.

Well the whole thing was a flop. People mostly just ended up making fun of it, and WIN buttons became a joke, with some people wearing them upside down to explain that NIM stood for “No Immediate Miracles.”
